The differences between dry-type transformer and oil-immersed transformer

The differences between dry-type transformers and oil-immersed transformers, as follows:

1. Structure and Encapsulation: The iron core and windings of dry-type transformers are encapsulated with solid insulating materials such as resin casting. They have an open or semi-closed structure, allowing the internal components to be directly visible. The iron core and windings of oil-immersed transformers are immersed in transformer oil and encapsulated in a sealed oil tank. There are usually radiators on the outside.

2. Cooling Medium: Dry-type transformers use air or gases such as SF6 as the cooling medium. Oil-immersed transformers use transformer oil as the cooling and insulating medium.

3. Heat Dissipation Method: Dry-type transformers rely on natural air convection or forced air cooling by built-in fans for heat dissipation. Some high-end products use heat pipes and other means to enhance heat dissipation. Oil-immersed transformers transfer heat to the oil tank wall and heat dissipation devices through the circulation and convection of transformer oil for heat dissipation.

4. Capacity and Voltage Level: Dry-type transformers are usually used for small to medium capacities, and the voltage level generally does not exceed 35kV. Oil-immersed transformers are suitable for large capacities and high voltage levels. They have a wide capacity range, and the voltage level can reach 110kV and above.

5. Installation Environment and Safety: Dry-type transformers do not contain oil and have good fireproof performance. They are suitable for installation inside buildings and other places with high fire safety requirements. However, the operating environment has relatively strict requirements for temperature and humidity. In case of a fault in an oil-immersed transformer, it may lead to the combustion of the oil. They are usually installed in a dedicated indoor transformer room or an independent explosion-proof oil transformer house outdoors and require the installation of fire-fighting facilities. However, they have strong environmental adaptability.

6. Economy and Maintenance: The manufacturing process of dry-type transformers is complex, and the cost is high. But the maintenance is simple. There is no need to change the oil regularly. It is only necessary to pay attention to dust prevention, moisture prevention, and the operation of the fans. The initial investment of oil-immersed transformers is low. During maintenance, it is necessary to pay attention to the state of the insulating oil, and regularly take samples for testing, filtering, or replacement. However, they have a relatively strong overload capacity.
