There is an urgent need for transformers in smart grid construction

In the next few years, the State Grid Corporation of China will start to build an ultra-high voltage backbone grid of a “three-vertical and three-horizontal structure” connecting China’s large energy bases and major power load centers, which requires a lot of intelligent high-voltage equipment such as transformers, reactors, circuit breakers, GIS, power cables, high-voltage bushings, etc. What are the problems in the intelligent development of primary equipment in China at present? What are the intelligent development directions of primary devices? What obstacles need to be overcome in terms of intelligent development? The reporter had an interview with Doctor Yi Yonghui, the General Manager of XJ Grid Protection Automation Company.

Although manufacturers have begun to value and use new sensor technologies and intelligent components, the safety and reliability of transformers have not been significantly improved. Therefore, Yi Yonghui advocated to improve the reliability of the transformer body, strengthen research on new materials, new processes and new design, optimize the main vertical insulation structure, moderately increase the insulation margin of the transformer, guaranteed that the design value conforms to the actual value, so as to achieve energy conservation, consumption reduction and environmental protection in a real sense.

At present, there are mainly several structural forms of high-voltage circuit breakers, including column circuit breakers, tank circuit breakers, HGIS, GIS, etc. Increasing efforts are made in terms of R&D of performance reliability, functional integration, a small land occupation area and a low engineering cost of such types of circuit breakers. Yi Yonghui stated that high-voltage circuit breakers are achieving high functional integration, i.e. functions of primary equipment are integrated to achieve a smaller land occupation area, energy conservation and environmental protection; synchronous control devices are adopted and reasonable operating time is selected to achieve the goal of limiting transient current or voltage, to reduce the stress on insulation equipment in the power system and to reduce electrical wear of corresponding controlled circuit breakers.

The running condition of electronic transformers is unsatisfactory. Yi Yonghui believed that research on key technologies should be strengthened, and special research on key technologies, design and process issues in the manufacturing and application of electronic transformers should be performed; the testing capability should be improved to meet the increasing demand for quality inspection of electronic transformers, and technical standards and management norms should be further improved and optimized.

In terms of the intelligent online comprehensive monitoring system, Yi Yonghui suggested that research on the online comprehensive monitoring system should be strengthened, and planned repair, maintenance and data-based management should be achieved through operation, control and communication interconnection to reduce equipment operation risks and lower operating costs.

Yi Yonghui also said that the service life of the sensor should be taken into consideration in research on application of transformers, it should be close to the primary device body, and the impact of the built-in sensor on running of the main equipment body should be considered, and research on the placement of sensors should be performed.
